Many people forget that acupuncture is a therapy in which we are training the body to adjust itself. Just like physical therapy, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy, multiple treatments are needed for the body to heal itself.
The specific number of treatments you may require depends on the nature and severity of your condition. Once we are able to determine your rate of response, we will custom design a treatment plan, which we call AcuTherapy. Usually, patients are able to see results right away and the number of treatments ranges from 5 to 15 for your chief complaint.
Below are some general tips to help you towards optimal health.
- Deep Breathing
Unfortunately, in our culture, we are often stressed. As stress & tension builds, we forget to breathe properly. An exercise to enable proper breathing to occur is to inhale for 1 count; hold for 4 counts; and exhale for 2 counts. Doing sets of 10, 3 times a day allows for not only proper breathing to occur but also releases stress & tension.
- Drinking Water
How many glasses of water should you drink a day? There is much conflicting information on how much water an individual should drink per day. As we all know, water is essential to good health; however, the amount of water an individual should drink, interesting enough, varies from individual to individual. In general, an individual should drink one half his / her body weight in ounces.
Unfortunately, we are all too familiar with the statistics. Recent reports indicate that 66% of Americans are overweight. In general, 30 minutes of brisk walking a day benefits health. Movement and breathing continuously bathes each cell and drains away the detritus in the circulatory system.
In general, if you get less than eight hours of sleep a night, you are operating impaired. In other words, your alertness, productivity, creativity, and general health are all affected. Also, “between the seventh and eighth hour is when we get almost an hour of REM sleep, the time when the mind repairs itself. If you’re a six-hour sleeper [, which most Americans, unfortunately, are,] you’re missing the last, important opportunity to repair and prepare for the coming day.”
Minimum of 20 minutes a day. “Brief but unfettered exposure to sunshine or its equivalent several times a week can help to ward off a host of debilitating and sometimes deadly diseases, including osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, depression and cancers of the colon, prostate and breast.”
If you are in pain, foods to avoid (i.e. foods that are pro-inflammatory in nature) include:
- Wheat, corn, and flour products
- Dairy products and commercial eggs
- Red meat (beef, pork)
- Refined sugars
- Peanuts, tomato, and potato
- Fruit juice and citrus fruits
- Processed foods
- Hydrogenated oils
- Fried foods
