Does acupuncture work to tangibly reduce costs and
absence through injury?

Acupuncture is the most effective pain management therapy in the Chinese Medicine System. It works by releasing opioids which reduce pain and moderate the nervous system and releasing endorphins which stimulate the body’s immune system, allowing the body to heal more quickly.

Using acupuncture, we have helped many patients recover from injury and return to work. Many had tried other therapies without success, and most had been prescribed pain medication by their doctors.

A 44 year old male came to us two years
after being involved in a car accident which
had left him with significant shoulder pain.

He was scheduled for surgery, but while waiting for surgery, the patient started acupuncture, supported by physical therapy.
After 22 sessions of acupuncture at Metis
Clinics LLC supported with 8 sessions of
physical therapy, the patient was pain-free
and canceled his surgery.

Three years later, this patient is still free
of pain in the shoulder and continues to
opt out of surgery.

Financial Impact
We saved the insurance company around
$13,300. The average shoulder surgery costs
$17,500. The patient’s acupuncture totalled
$2,200 and physical therapy totalled $2,000,
for a grand total of $4,200.

A 56 year old editor for a local newspaper
with carpal tunnel tendonitis in his right
Determined to avoid surgery the editor
pursued a course of acupuncture. After 15
treatment sessions, the patient had minimal
to non-existent discomfort in his right wrist.

Three years later, the patient has no right
wrist discomfort and no longer wears a
wrist brace to work.

The average wrist surgery costs $10,000.
This patient received 15 acupuncture
sessions totaling $750.

Financial Impact
We helped this editor save his insurance
company $9,000 in costs and avoid loss

Whiplash is defined as injury to the neck. Whiplash occurs when muscles and ligaments in and around the neck are suddenly stretched, pulled and/or distorted. Whiplash often occurs with car accidents and can cause referring pain and sensory discomfort to the shoulders, back and head.

When whiplash occurs, we will ask you where the discomfort is; what it feels like and how long it has persisted. Once we are able to determine the muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones that are affected, we can custom design an acupuncture treatment for you. Often, with whiplash, patients see immediate results, especially when they come in near the date of their injury. As the discomfort decreases, we will continue to ask you where and what the discomfort feels like so that we can provide you with the best acupuncture treatment possible.

With whiplash, we believe that we can help you to expedite the recovery process. We ask that you come into our clinics sooner than later. The reason for this is that we believe that if we give you an acupuncture treatment in the acute stage, where the symptoms are the most severe, we believe we can resolve your issue more quickly. This means fewer acupuncture treatments and a shorter recovery time for you. Thus, if you know of a loved one who has whiplash, especially, after a car accident, ask them not to wait to come see us at Metis Clinics.

Acupuncture for Sinusitis

Sinusitis, specifically sinus infections, can be extremely painful. I know I have had them.

Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses. This inflammation may be caused by a fungus, bacteria, virus, etc., entering and infecting the sinuses. On your face, there are four paired sinuses and these sinuses are located in tightly closed spaces. Thus, one can image that if a fungus, bacteria, virus, etc., enters one of these tightly closed spaces, it can easily get stuck and cause an inflammation and/or infection of the sinuses.

The location of your pain, pressure, and overall discomfort will determine which of the four paired sinuses are inflamed and/or infected. For example, sinusitis may be caused by the maxillary sinuses, frontal sinuses, ethmoid sinuses, and/or sphenoid sinuses.

Most sinusitis results in a headache. Specifically, though, if you are experiencing discomfort on your checks, you most likely are experiencing maxillary sinusitis. If you are experiencing discomfort above your eyes and brow line, you most likely are experiencing frontal sinusitis. Moreover, if you are experiencing discomfort between the eyes, you most likely are experiencing ethmoid sinusitis. Lastly, if you are experiencing discomfort behind the eyes, you are most likely experiencing sphenoid sinusitis.

Based on the location of your discomfort, we will know where to place the acupuncture needles for your sinusitis. It is important to note here that although your sinuses are located on your face, we rarely place acupuncture needles on your face to treat your sinusitis. My clinically view, on this, is that if you have an area of your body that is already inflamed, particularly your sinuses, I prefer not to further inflame these areas by placing acupuncture needles in them. Rather, I prefer to place acupuncture needles in distal parts of your body, on your extremities, to allow your sinuses to heal properly. Thus, when you come to our clinics, you will see that we rarely place acupuncture needles on your face to treat your sinuses.

Also, sinuses can be tricky to treat. If after 3-4 visits with me we are not happy with your progression, we introduce herbal and food therapies to expedite the healing process.
